SHC Christmas & New Year Pastoral Letter 2018

First of all, I thankGod for my vocation as a priest serving in his vineyard, especially in the Diocese of Sibu. Next, I would like to thank our Bishop, Rt. Rev. Joseph Hii, for his confidence in me as the Rector of this Parish. Indeed, this is a heavy task which is impossible without the grace from God.

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Advent is the season when we are called to prepare well so as to receive Christ into our lives meaningfully in whatever situation we are in. The messages of the Scripture readings throughout this season serve to enlighten us toward that objective. As we prepare to receive Christ this Christmas, I would like to take this opportunity to update all our faithful on the recent and future development of our Parish both spiritually and physically.

  1.   It is a great joy that our parish shall be organizing the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Sacerdotal Ordination of Bishop Emeritus Dominic Su as well as his 80th birthday in December 2019. As such, we shall have sufficient time for preparation.
  2. The Parish Pastoral Council shall be dissolved in 2019 and the election for the new members shall be held not later than the second half of the year. Please do propose those who are qualified and saintly for this responsibility.
  3. Our Parish as the Mother Church of the Diocese shall start the ball rolling by encouraging the faithful to commit themselves to monthly contributions. The various movements of the Parish shall help to register and explain to those who are to be enrolled in this program.
  4. Inline with our Diocese’s motto – “that we may be one” cf. Jn 17:21, the various youth groups have been grouped into one, known as Parish Youth Committee. Soon, other groups may also be restructured so as to reflect the meaning of the said motto. Consequently, more common spiritual activities shall be organised involving all in the spirit of journeying together.
  5. Having said the above, it is opportune to examine the progress of our ‘unity’ by organising a Thanksgiving Mass cum Dinner in July to celebrate the 34thAnniversary of the Dedication of our beloved Cathedral. I hope that we can all make an effort to contribute to the success of this meaningful event.
  6. Pastoral Visit – in order to serve like “shepherds living with the smell of their sheep”, I would like to carry out my pastoral duty through home visitations. This shall be done in collaboration with various pastoral apostolates.
  7. Fund Raising for Sibujaya and Julau New Church buildings – The construction of the new Church buildings in both places are in progress. However, there is still shortage of fund. Hence, the Diocese shall raise fund through the sale of raffle tickets. Please do show your support both in prayers and also in purchasing the raffle tickets.

I thank you for spending time to read this pastoral letter. Having been here for almost half a year, I have discovered and learned more as we journey together. I would also like to take this occasion to apologize should I had hurt anyone in one way or another both in words and deeds.

On behalf of the Bishop of Sibu, Rt. Rev. Joseph Hii, I wish you all a very blessed Christmas and Happy New year 2019!

Yours Fraternally, Rev. Philip Hu (Rector)
